Ideas for Christmas and Birthday Presents for Little Girls

Nov 6, 2009 Sarah Mathiesen

Give the little lady in your life a Christmas or birthday present she's sure to cherish for years to come.

Buying meaningful gifts for children can be difficult because they tend to outgrow them so quickly. By purchasing Christmas and birthday presents that will grow with the child, you can ensure that the gift gains a sentimental place in the recipient's heart.

A great gift for a young girl doesn't have to be pink or covered in fairies. Here are some gift ideas for girls that are guaranteed to still be sitting pretty after the 10th birthday.

Gifts of Jewellery for Young Girls

What woman doesn't love a bit of bling?

Jewellery is a great gift for girls of all ages and, if the piece is as appropriate for a girl as it is a woman, something that will only increase in sentimental value as a girl gets older. When shopping for jewellery as a birthday or Christmas present for a young girl, look for something with a simple and classic design – this will ensure the timelessness of the piece.

Girls' jewellery doesn't have to be as pricey silver or gold piece, it could also be a sturdy beaded bracelet or an interesting brooch made of more common stones than diamonds or rubies.

Some other pieces of jewellery that may be appropriate as a present for a young girl include:

  • an identity bracelet with the girl's name engraved on it
  • a signet ring featuring the girl's birthstone or intials
  • a monogram necklace
  • a plain neck chain or bracelet
  • small studded earrings
  • anything with pearls

For a gift that can be built on with each of the girl's birthdays or Christmases, think about buying a charm or Pandora bracelet.

A Present to Hide Her Treasures In

A jewellery box, musical or otherwise, makes a beautiful present for a little girl to stow away her pretty little collections in. Pick up a beautiful box from a homeware store, find something special in an op-shop or buy a plain wooden box from a craft store and decorate it with paint, decoupage and pretty glue-on items.

Give Furniture for Christmas or BirthdaysDon't shy away from giving furniture as gifts for little girls. The item needn't be big or expensive, just something that a girl can call her own and be proud to show off to all of her friends. Mum and dad will thankyou for contributing to the rather large task of furnishing a growing girl's bedroom too. Furniture items that make good presents for girls include:

  • a chest of drawers
  • a vanity table
  • a mirror
  • a reading chair
  • a drawing table
  • a bookcase

Again, make sure the item is appropriate for the age of the girl at the time you give the gift and for a few years time. Plain white or timber items will never go out of style and can be adapted to suit a girl's unique personality.

Little Presents for Little Girls

It's a woman's prerogative to delight in tastefully decorating her living space. Give a little girl a head start by buying her gifts that she will be proud to display now and in the future. Such gifts for girls include:

  • decorative bookends
  • a money box
  • clocks
  • lamps
  • vases
  • wall hangings such as paintings, landscape pictures or decorative nic-nacs

While buying practical gift for children may not be the most exciting thing on Christmas day or at birthday parties, it is more likely that the presents will still be cherished long after Barbie has been sent to the reject shop and the hula hoop forgotten.
